CPE Program of CHS and the Diocese of Rockville Centre

CHS office Rockville Centre

In keeping with the mission of Jesus, the Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program provides excellence in professional ministry education, preparing persons of all faiths to provide compassionate and respectful spiritual care to all patients and families.

The program is committed to the formation of men and women in competency as spiritual caregivers to persons of all faiths. It is an action/reflection model of adult education that unites theology with ministry, knowledge with process and theory with practice, thus combining the practice of spiritual care with qualified supervision and peer group reflection.

The CPE program is built on the foundation of the Mission of Catholic Health Services of Long Island (CHS) and the standards set by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. (ACPE). CHS is accredited by the ACPE to offer Level I/Level II CPE and Supervisory CPE.

  • CPE is interfaith professional training for ministry. It brings theological students and ministers and laypersons of all faiths into supervised encounters with persons in crisis.
  • Out of an intense involvement with persons in needs, and the feedback from peers and teachers, students develop new awareness of themselves as persons and of the needs of those to whom they minister.
  • Within the interdisciplinary team process of helping persons, students develop skills in inter-personal and inter- professional relationships.
  • CPE students work alongside staff chaplains and other interdisciplinary team members in an environment that works towards what is best for the patients of the hospital and their families.
  • A key learning component is challenging students to examine their ministry approaches, their interpersonal postures, and personal and theological meaning making within a large institution.
